Everyone’s Second-Favourite UAE Weekend Trip
Musandam Peninsula — the “Norway of Arabia” — sits just 2 hours from RAK city. Khasab dhow cruises, Zighy Bay resort at Six Senses, and jaw-dropping fjord views make it the weekend of choice for UAE residents who’ve done Hatta and want something bigger. But the drive involves a real international border crossing, an Omani visa, and route knowledge most Careem drivers don’t have. This 2026 guide covers everything you need to book a smooth cross-border car lift from UAE to Oman & Musandam.
The Two Main Routes
Route 1: UAE → Musandam (Khasab) via Al Dara Border
The classic weekend trip. Cross at Al Dara border post north of RAK. Distance and driving times:
- Dubai city → Khasab: 260 km, 3.5–4 hours (including border)
- Sharjah → Khasab: 240 km, 3–3.5 hours
- RAK city → Khasab: 85 km, 1.5–2 hours
- Fujairah → Khasab: 200 km, 3–3.5 hours via RAK
Route 2: UAE → Mainland Oman (Muscat) via Hatta / Hafeet Borders
Longer trip, more official border check. Popular for business trips to Muscat.
- Dubai → Muscat via Hatta: 450 km, 5–6 hours
- Al Ain → Muscat via Hafeet: 320 km, 4–5 hours
- Dubai → Nizwa: 400 km, 5 hours
- Dubai → Salalah (very long): 1,000 km — flight recommended, but road doable in 12+ hours

- Vehicle registration + Omani insurance
- UAE exit stamp (auto-scanned, no fee)
Oman Side
- Omani e-visa (apply online at rop.gov.om, AED 55 for 10-day tourist)
- Passport stamp fee (usually included in e-visa)
- Musandam-only permit: no Omani visa needed if you have a UAE residence visa and are staying only in Musandam (free of charge, checked at border)
- For mainland Oman (Muscat, Nizwa): full Omani visa required
Musandam Loophole — Big Time Saver
If you’re only going to Musandam (Khasab, Zighy Bay, Kumzar) and hold a valid UAE residence visa, you do not need an Omani tourist visa. You can enter Musandam free of charge and stay up to 14 days. This applies to over 90% of our cross-border passengers. Mainland Oman (Muscat, Nizwa, Salalah) still requires the Omani e-visa.
Border Crossing Timing
- Al Dara border (Musandam): open 24/7, average processing 30–60 min
- Hatta border (mainland): open 24/7, 45–90 min
- Hafeet border (Al Ain): open 24/7, 30–60 min
- Friday and public holiday peak: add 30–45 min
- Ramadan iftar time: quiet crossings, add only 15 min
Our drivers know the fastest lanes and immigration officers, which shortens processing significantly.
Return Trip Tips
- Book both legs together for a discount (10–15% off)
